In the geophysical world we have created synthetic seismic traces from well logs for decades. These allow us to tie the depth in a well to the travel-time on a seismic section. These models have expanded to include offset models for studying anticipated seismic amplitudes as a function of the offset of the seismic source and receivers. One of the more interesting models is the work of Dr. Scott Bowman, who has developed software to simulate with a geological model the probability reservoir sands will be found along a certain cross-section (Figure 35).
