. . . Expanded Resume

Nelson, H. Roice, Jr. - Founder

Qualification Summary

Twenty + years experienced in both entrepreneurial and technical roles in the oil and gas industry as an explorer and a principal. Consulting focus is on integrated geotechnical projects (emphasizing interactive 2-D and 3-D seismic interpretation) and designing responsive environments (improving information and knowledge management and computer visualization of designs). Both areas of interest emphasize the use of hypermedia computer technologies and virtual enterprise business concepts. Consulting work is through the wholley owned company Walden 3-D, Inc.

Initial founder/Chairman of the Board of HyperMedia Corporation, which during fiscal 1995, it's last year of operation, had a revenue of $529,966. There were $2 million in revenues over the life of the company. When founded in January 1991, the company was positioned and had the hypermedia technology to have become NetScape Communications. But undercapitalization, problems in the primary market (oil & gas exploration and production), and a lack of leadership conspired to limit success. Learned a lot about information technologies, and solved significant information problems for Aramco, Fletcher Challenge Petroleum, the Global Basins Research Network, Mobil Oil, and Unocal.

Initial founder/employee of LANDMARK GRAPHICS CORPORATION which has grown to annual revenues of U.S. $171 million for fiscal 1995. The interactive seismic interpretation technologies developed and marketed by Landmark have changed the way all oil companies explore for new and extended hydrocarbon reserves. Designed Landmark's first interactive interpretation user interface and functionality, specifying software enhancements, new product requirements, and setting strategic direction. Procured sales and joint marketing agreements and created markets for Landmark in Australia, Canada, China, Europe including Hungary, India, Latin America, and the domestic United States.

Assisted and trained clients for 13+ years in interactive interpretation techniques, new technologies in exploration geophysics, sequence stratigraphy, information management for multi-disciplinary teams, and Best Practice methodologies.

Coordinated and managed AGL (Allied Geophysical Laboratories) which entailed the creation of four new labs from SAL (Seismic Acoustics Laboratory, where also served as a Senior Research Scientist) - RCL (Keck Research Computation Laboratory), IPL (Cullen Image Processing Laboratory), WLL (Well Logging Laboratory), FRL (Field Research Laboratory) - and increased sponsorships for SAL from 33 to 42 oil industry companies with funding from sponsorships and donations in excess of $3,000,000. The growth in personnel at the AGL and associated labs rose from 17 to 65 employees. Published or presented 130+ papers, including the book New Technologies in Exploration Geophysics: Gulf Publishing Company, 281 pages, 1983; and the article, "Introduction to Interactive 3D Interpretation," Oil & Gas Journal, V. 79, No. 40, pp. 106-125, 1981, which forecast the impact of interactive interpretation technologies. Work as a geoscientist has provided him solid experience in seismic data acquisition, processing, and interpretation. His seismic data acquisition training included work on seismic field crews in:

Running 4 seismic crews for 1 1/2 years resulted in extensive field experience in:

These crews used a variety of sources, including:

Half a dozen noise studies were conducted and interpreted. Six months of seismic processing experience was supplemented by processing the physical and numerical model data at the SAL.

Regional interpretation projects include:

Detailed seismic interpretation projects include:

Interests

Family, art, boy scouts, choir, cosmology, creativity, entrepreneurship, genealogy, geotechnical integration, greenhouse, guitar, hypermedia, literature, making a difference, music, outdoors, pattern finding, people, presentations, reading, religious traditions, seismic acquisition and interpretation (2-D and 3-D), writing (particularly Prime Words), writing songs, and the World-Wide-Web.

Experiences in England in 1970 led to starting a project with a good friend and an architect, Raymond Gardner, that eventually became Walden 3-D, Inc. The basic goal continues to be to make a difference. The initial vision statement was "Building 3-D Intelligent Cities," and it has evolved to "Designing Responsive Environments" (for urban and rural planning activities), and to "Creatively Combining Concepts" (for oil & gas exploration activities).

As a key component of the third-dimension of the prototype city has conceptually evolved to become computer networks, Project Mind came on the scene. The transformation envisioned here is more radical, and in a shorter time frame than the 40 to 80 year projects Walden 3-D has pursued to date. Therefore the viability of this project is being explored. In parallel, there is work being done with the University of Houston's Virtual Environment Technology Laboratory (VETL).
