The Flag

Welcome to "Thoughtlets." This is a weekly review of an idea, belief, thought, or words that will hopefully be of some benefit to you, my children, with an electronic copy to on-line extended family members. Any of you can ask me not to clutter your mail box at any time.

"It was kind of a quiet week for me, which gave me time for reflection and pondering about what are the appropriate next steps in my life. Too bad I haven't come to any conclusions yet. Monday I went down to 1221 Lamar, the 13th floor above The Park, and met with Wulf Massel's staff. They like the IDEF model I built. Tuesday morning I went to a seminar by Spotfire (see www.spotfire.com), who have a wonderful statistical package. Ben, I anticipate you could use it for some of the strategic planning you are doing. I went home, and Andrea brought me back to the Galleria, where there was an outstanding meeting with Woodside Petroleum. Then Tuesday afternoon Richard Nehring and I drove to Lafayette for the GCPE (Gulf Coast Prospect Expo), where we spent Wednesday morning. This makes three big conventions in three weeks (APPEX, SEG, and now GCPE). Everyone I share the Dynamic Resources story with is very positive about the steps we are taking and the work we have done. I'm convinced we are sitting on what will prove to be a very successful, and a very beneficial for society, business opportunity. I got back to the house about 9:20 Wednesday evening. Thursday morning I was back down with Wulf's staff. Thursday afternoon and Friday was spent a Chroma. Saturday was mostly spent working on Wulf's IDEF model.

Each morning we tied the flag my Dad had up on the mamosa tree outside of our front door and next to the layered rock from Tipton, Wyoming. Each evening we brought it in the house. Thursday it rained, and Matt brought the flag in wet just as I got to the house. We forgot to put it up today, or rather it was raining when we left for church, and it did not seem appropriate to tie it to the tree.

When I went for a run/walk around the block on Saturday, the thing that kept ringing in my mind was the symbolism of the flag. And so I am going to spend the rest of this Thoughtlet, sharing my rememberances, e-mail's I've received about the war with terrorists, and all of the other fall out from what happened in New York 12 days ago. I'm going to start with an e-mail from lds-youngwomen, an e-mail group Andrea subscribes to, even though the e-mail is probably 20 years old:

`TRIBUTE TO THE UNITED STATES This, from a Canadian newspaper, is worth sharing. America: The Good Neighbor. Widespread but only partial news coverage was given recently to a remarkable editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian television commentator. What follows is the full text of his sharp remarks as printed in the Congressional Record: "This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth. Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of these countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States. When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it. When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that hurries in to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by tornadoes. Nobody helped. The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent, warmongering Americans. I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10? If so, why don't they fly them? Why do all the International lines except Russia fly American Planes? Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman on the moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles. You talk about American technocracy, and you find men on the moon - not once, but several times and safely home again. You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everybody to look at. Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here. When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke. I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake. Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of those.'

Paul just called. Yesterday his ward scout group sold 1,000 shirts with the flag and the words `United We Stand' on the front. They made $3,000. profit, after paying for the shirts, and are going to donate it to The American Red Cross. He said they had a line all day long at a table in front of Sam's. The New York attack was on Kate's birthday. The only change they have seen in Provo is that when he goes to Salt Lake for training for the Olympics translation (he is going to be the Russian translator for the Belarussian Hockey Team) he used to just go up to the 13th floor, and now he has to go through two separate security checks. Evidently Mitt Romney was in Washington D.C. on the day of the attack and has got the budget for security for the Olympics raised to $217 million from the $90 million used for security for Atlanta games. He also said Britney Reed is in the lab class he is the Teacher's Assistant for, and he told his class she was guaranteed an A because she is the only girl, she is from Texas, and she grew up in his old ward. Paul, I hope your sense of humor doesn't get you in more trouble than you can dig yourself out of. Kate is now showing nicely, and the baby is moving around a lot.

Harold Burnham sent me the following e-mail this week, which I found very interesting:

`The die is cast - but it will be a long war by Israeli Intelligence Experts This piece is from the DEBKA-net-newsletter, an expensive intelligence newsletter out of Israel. This is said to be a real "must-read" newsletter, put together by intelligence experts - not always on the money but far better stuff than you'll read in the papers. You be the judge. --------------------------------------- The United States is going to war to avenge itself for the catastrophic hijack-suicide attacks against the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The first stage of the conflict, according to initial, conservative estimates, could last two to three years. Its success will determine the scope and timeframe of the second phase. DEBKAfile's military experts can disclose that the U.S. 82nd and 101st airborne divisions, or nearly half of the airborne combat forces at the immediate disposal of U.S. President George W. Bush, are currently being airlifted to bases in Pakistan. The bulk of these forces will be moved to the northern Punjab region of Pakistan and take up position near the city of Dera Ismail and in the valleys at the foot of the Suleiman mountain range, across from their main target - the Afghan city of Kandahar. The United States also intends to lay siege to, or capture, the Afghan cities of Medan, Galdek and Maroof as well as the Arghastan Valley, where, according to intelligence provided by Russia, India and Israel, Osama bin Laden's forces have been concentrated in recent months. The U.S. operations will include air bombardments and missile strikes against Afghanistan's principal cities: Kabul, Jalalabad and Kandahar. Afghanistan is not the only target. Washington is planning a three-stage offensive against Iraq with the participation of U.S., British and Turkish forces. DEBKAfile's military sources reported back on Friday, September 9, that the Turkish army is on a state of war alert. Now, our sources add that the Turkish army is poised along its border with Kurdish northern Iraq. It intends to invade the Shouman region and capture the cities of Biyar and Tiwal in the Urman district. The two cities are controlled by Jund al-Islam, a radical Muslim group funded by bin Laden. The United States now understands that the 200 Taliban fighters who arrived there in mid-July, puzzling many observers, were members of bin Laden's general staff, pulled out of Afghanistan two months earlier as part of his preparations for Tuesday's terror attacks in New York and Washington. Now they will be quarries of a US-Turkish hunt in one prong of the thrust into Iraq. A simultaneous attack second attack will be spearheaded in the Basra area by some 30,000 British soldiers, currently being airlifted into bases in Oman. DEBKAfile's military sources report that two-thirds of that force was present in Oman Saturday. U.S. and British planes already based in Kuwait, and in Saudi Arabia will provide air cover for the British forces operating in Basra - if the Saudi government agrees to its air bases being used in the U.S. operation. Prong three of the Iraqi wing of the multiple offensive will target the central region, including Baghdad. Airlifted infantry and armor, as well as missiles and tanks, will be used in an effort to destroy the Iraqi infrastructure and topple Saddam Hussein's regime. No final decision has been made on a timetable for the three assault waves into Iraq. These operations, lasting between two and three weeks, are only the first steps in the coming conflict, which Bush has described as "the first war of the 21st century". Bin Laden had not been blind to the likelihood of U.S. retaliation. According to U.S. intelligence estimates, he and his cohorts have been preparing for months for the assaults and have readied their response. Intelligence specialists believe bin Laden and his associates -- including the Egyptian Islamic Jihad, the terror master's main operational arm -- will carry out a series of attacks on U.S. army bases, especially air and naval facilities, in the United States, Europe and the Middle East. For the first time, the Americans have acknowledged the presence of an enemy within. Members of bin Laden's group have been trained by the U.S. army and some still serve in various U.S. military units, raising the prospect that attacks could be launched from within the bases themselves. (See also separate item on this page.). Bin Laden's men will make a supreme effort to attack aircraft carriers, along with such strategic targets in the United States, such as CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia or FBI headquarters in Washington. Before the Tuesday's calamities, this scenario would have sounded fantastic. Other targets may include atomic energy stations, where the highest state of alert is already in effect. U.S. military units rushed to the stations have set up defensive perimeters around them. Oil fields and terminals -- including, for the first time, fields in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait -- are other potential targets. Bush's ability to wage a drawn-out war will largely depend on the toll bin Laden's reprisals take in terms of lives and U.S. public support for the president's military campaign. The main question will be not who will win, but the price the victor will pay for his victory -- and the loser's winnings, if any, on his way to defeat. That defeat may not even be final or lasting. It's also important to consider two potential features of the first stage of this war. 1. It is only a start. Even if the U.S. military actions in Afghanistan and Iraq are successful -- and there is no guarantee of this -- bin Laden and the Egyptian Islamic Jihad will still have large pockets at their command in Yemen, Bosnia, Kosovo, Albania, Macedonia and several former Soviet Moslem republics. The largest contingent of bin Laden-funded Islamic extremist fighters are deployed in the Faragna Valley which lies athwart regions of Krygyzstan, Tadjikistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. Last year, Bin Laden's forces opened up a corridor from Faranga to the Sinkiang province of northern China, linking up the Moslem fighters in that strategic valley and militant Chinese Moslem groups of the Chinese Uighur tribes. This tribes are undergoing combat training in special training camps that bin Laden established in Afghanistan and Kazakhstan. There is no knowing now how US strategists mean to deal with these forces bin Laden maintains in these far-flung regions. They cannot be left out of the American equation because as long as they exist, bin Laden retains an operational capability. Will they be left to the Russians and Chinese? Perhaps the Moslem governments of Asia Minor will invite the U.S. forces or NATO to do the job? 2. This war opens up the potential for nuclear, chemical and biological weapons use. Some U.S. leaders have emphasized since Friday night that the United States will employ its "entire arsenal" in the coming campaign. Even British prime minister Tony Blair, speaking in parliament on Friday, September 14, noted the danger the West faces from terror attacks could include nuclear, chemical and biological weapons. Israel has voiced strong support for the formation of an anti-terror coalition. But at this stage, the Bush administration prefers to bring Syria in, which means excluding Israeli from its anti-bin Laden alliance, in the hope of providing manoeuvring room for Saudi Arabia to collaborate. Getting Damascus on board would also sever the Syrian-Iraqi link that has recently grown stronger, as well as snapping its connection with the militant Lebanese Hizballah. Those Shiite extremists would have no option but to break away from a Syrian government that goes to war against bin Laden. The US war scenario carries advantages for Israel, but is an ill wind for the Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and the relentless campaign of violence he launched a year ago. Some Israeli media reported, inaccurately, that Washington wants the Palestinians in the coalition fighting bin Laden. According to DEBKAfile's Washington sources, that view is confined mainly to secretary of state Colin Powell, who believes Palestinian participation might pave the way for other Arab countries to join. It might even help encourage certain European nations made cagey by their large Moslem populations and economic and strategic links to oil states in North Africa and the Middle East, to take up arms against the Saudi terrorist leader. Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon, who strongly opposes a Palestinian role in the US-led bloc of nations against bin Laden, made his views clear to President Bush when they talked over the telephone on Friday. The next day, Abu Ala, Palestinian parliament Speaker, termed the suicide terror attacks in New York and Washington saddening. But, he said, the world must understand that the real terrorism was that committed by Israel against the Palestinians. In an extraordinary encounter in Washington Friday, September 14, Arab ambassadors bombarded Secretary Powell and other administration officials with questions about the nature, form and objectives of the planned US military retaliation. US officials rapped out that they did not want questions only a single answer from all the Arab governments: Were they for or against America.'

I find all of this interesting and scary. I did not live through World War II. However, it is easy, as I talk to friends, to imagine the war fervor that must have followed Pearl Harbor. My Dad had his appendix out, and was not able to sign up with his buddies to go into the war. I can imagine that those who did serve (Dick Leigh [../0007.html], Pat Fenton [../0007.html], Andrea's Dad - Morris Shirts, Dad's younger brother Ted Nelson, and numerous others in Cedar City), had feelings about those who stayed home. I sense this in conversations with Uncle Tony, who served in Korea, and certainly among those of my friends who served in Viet Nam. I was willing to go to Viet Nam if my draft board sent me (Dick Leigh was in charge of the Draft Board), and I was scared to death. I have already written about how tramatic the night was for me where they selected, by lottery drawing of birthdates, what order we would be called up for the draft (../9728.html, 9904.html, and 0007.html). I failed a physics test, and I was so relieved to have number 340. Sara, I'm sure all of this was behind my overreaction the night you and your Mom were having fun concerning a school project about the flag. Symbols tend to move my emotions, and certainly the U.S. flag is one of the significant symbols in my life.

I remember a Ward Party when we were at the old building in Katy. Marti told her famous pink gorillia joke. I'm going to repeat it, specifically because I've heard that I do not really remember any of the good times we had, and I do. Anyway, there was a man who collected exhotic animals and he wanted to go on a vacation. So he called up the exhotic animal sitting society and asked them to send someone over. After showing the man all of the animals he told him there was one last animal, a very rare pink gorilla. To get to the cage they pulled the vase off of the table cloth, the tablecloth off of the table, moved the table, moved the carpet, opened the trap door, went down three flights of stairs, went through the 10 ton door, the 20 ton door, the 30 ton door, and back in the dark resesses of the room was a cage with the pink gorilla in it. The exhotic animal collector told the man how to take care of the gorilla and said, "Whatever you do do not touch the pink gorilla." Then they went out of the room and locked the 30 ton safe door, locked the 20 ton safe door, locked the 10 ton safe door, climbed the three flights of stairs, put the carpet on the floor, the table on the carpet, the tablecloth on the table, the vase on the table cloth, and the man went on his vacation. As the exhotic animal sitter was sitting there thinking about his instructions, he said to himself, "Why can't I touch the pink gorilla?" So he pulled the vase off of the table cloth, the tablecloth off of the table, moved the table, moved the carpet, opened the trap door, went down three flights of stairs, went through the 10 ton door, the 20 ton door, the 30 ton door, went back in the dark resesses of the room to the cage with the pink gorilla in it, reached in and he touched the pink gorilla. AND THE PINK GORILLA GOT VERY ANGRY AND STARTED TO ROAR. AND IT REACHED OUT AND GRABBED THE BARS OF IT'S CAGE AND STARTED TO BEND THE BARS. AND THE EXHOTIC ANIMAL SITTER WAS SCARED AND HE TURNED AND STARTED TO RUN. AND HE WENT OUT THE 30 TON DOOR AND LOCKED THE SAFE DOOR, THEN AS HE RAN TOWARDS THE 20 TON DOOR HE HEARD THE PINK GORILLA BUST OUT OF IT'S CAGE GRAB THE INSIDE OF THE THIRTY TON DOOR AND PULL IT OFF OF THE WALL. HE LOCKED THE 20 TON DOOR, AND THE PINK GORILLA CAME ROARING AND TORE IT OUT OF THE WALL. HE LOCKED THE 10 TON DOOR AND THE PINK GORILLA TORE IT OUT OF THE WALL. HE RAN UP THE STAIRS WITH THE PINK GORILLA RIGHT BEHIND. Run, climb, pant, pant, ROAR, run, climb, pant, pant, ROAR. He beat the pink gorilla to the top of the three flights of stairs and slammed down the trap door, put the rug on the floor, the table on the rug, the table cloth on the table, the vase on the table cloth, and the pink gorilla arrived at the top of the stairs and BANG, HE BROKE OPEN THE TRAP DOOR, SCATTERING THE CARPET, THE TABLE, THE TABLE CLOTH, AND THE VASE TO THE FOUR CORNERS OF THE ROOM. By this time the exhotic animal sitter was very scared, and he ran into the street and hailed a cab and said take me to the Empire State Building. As the cab drove off the pink gorilla emerged from the house and WENT ROARING AFTER THE CAB. When the cab got to the Empire State Building, the exhotic animal sitter jumped out and ran to the elevator and took the elevator to the top floor. Meanwhile the pink gorilla had caught up and he climbed the outside of the Empire State Building, ROARING ALL THE WAY UP. When the exhotic animal sitter got to the top he ran to the ladder to the roof, and climbed up it until he saw the flagpole, and he climbed the flagpole, just as the pink gorilla reached the observation deck and started to ROAR. As he climbed the flagpole he saw the American Flag (at this point in the story, completely out of breath Marti realized that she was wearing a sweater that looked like the flag, and she started to wave the flag like a belly dancer). The exhotic animal sitter climbed to the very top of the flag pole and was completely wrapped in the flag when the pink gorilla, ROARING AS HE CLIMBED, reached him, stuck out his hand and said `Tag, your it.' It was funny, and the flag was used in a respectful way.

Today, I received the following e-mail from the President of the AAPG:

`Dear AAPG Members: Individuals from thirty-two countries perished in the tragedy of September 11th, 2001. Most were from the United States, I am certain that many of you are directly and/or indirectly affected. AAPG extends heartfelt condolences to all whom have been regretfully affected. We will forever share in your distress and grief. Our members are truly like family, and many from outside the US have sent their condolences and shared their anguish with us--reaching out to their fellow geologists and geoscientists. I would like to share a few of their comments with you. Sincerely, Robbie R. Gries AAPG President Alexander (Sasha) Kitcha, Ukraine: Yesterday I was shocked hearing about those horrifying developments. The evil should not have any way to come again. Never and nowhere, I do hope. Please accept my sincere and deep condolences. Akif Narimanov and Sabina Movsumova, Azerbaijan: On behalf of the members of the Azerbaijan affiliate of American Association of Petroleum Geologists, please accept our deepest and sincere condolence with regards to the tragedy that took place yesterday, on 11th of September, in the American cities and that shook the whole world. We are in deep sorrow together with you during these hard for your Nation times. George Krastev Ajdanlijsky, Bulgaria: We are shocked of the yesterday' events. Please, our sympathy and support. Just if we can help with something! Alexander Guman, Belarus: We all in Belarus are shaken by yesterday's tragic events in your country. We very much regret that the misfortune overtook the American people. Feel our support. I wish you and your people to be out of danger. Barry Goldstein, Australia: I extend my heart-felt wishes for those suffering from the hateful actions in NY/Pa/DC. I'm from NY -- my sister/cousins live in NYC. All are OK. All are touched with the tragedy - but thankfully not injured. Fanis Hairoutdinov, Moscow: I'm shocked by all these sad events. I never thought that it could happen. I can imagine that you feel. The same we felt 2 years ago when we lost more than 200 people in 2 destroyed houses in Moscow. But even this is incomparably with your tragedy. I hope this will not happen again never and nowhere. Many of my friends ask me to tell that they condole with you. Peter Lloyd, Malaysia: Terrible events..... words really fail one. Our thoughts and prayers are with our many American colleagues and friends.... and behind that there is the complete shock that human beings could even contemplate such an outrage against what we consider as civilization. Looks like the US is pulling itself together with great resolve, a great inspiration. It also looks as if almost all the world's governments are standing in solidarity.... that too is of great comfort. Kazuo Nakayama, Japan: I am very sorry to hear of this big tragedy. But I hope and believe in the people's power in US. Kunle Adesida, Nigeria: In Nigeria everyone became stunned to a standstill as result of the dreadful terrorist act on USA for several days. It is unbelievable, a movie or not? Is it a fiction? It was a terrorist attack as finally revealed by CNN. Our President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo referred to the terrorist attack on the USA "AS A COWARD AND BARBARIC ACTIONS". He condemned it in totality and the whole people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria condemned the attack on the United State of America. We all continue to pray for America, the Americans and all those that live in the USA and the world in general. It is a big blow to the world. A stupid action orchestrated by uninformed minds. The question is, If it can happen to the Americans -- then the whole world is sunk. May the soul of the innocent victims rest in the Lord while peace returns and reigns. On behalf of my family, friends and colleagues we send our sympathy to our esteem AAPG members, their families and the Americans. Levan Bagdavadze, Tbilisi, Georgia: I was saddened to hear that terrible event, happened in NY and DC. Please accept my deepest sympathy in your time of sorrow. Jaromir Krejci, Czech Republic: We are watching TV and are scared with the events in the New York and Washington Cities. It is the horrible offense of the terrorists. We are feeling for you. Bernard Duval, France: We are all terribly shocked by what happened in your country. By addressing you as a friend and Past President of AAPG, I wish to extend our most supportive thoughts to you, our American colleagues of the Association and your fellow countrymen. We admire and respect America, and are sure that it will surmount this difficult time and come out of it even stronger. As a personal note, I saw American servicemen liberating my city, they also liberated my father in Germany, and so many of them sacrificed their lives for our freedom. We are so much indebted to the American Nation! We share your suffering, and pray. Rafael Tenreyro, Cuba: My family and I were shocked by the insanity of the ruthless attack of last Tuesday. We had the same feeling as the terrorist actions were done in our country. In this very hard and painful moment for the people of United States of America I wish to express my condolences for the victims of the horrendous crime in New York and Washington. Please transmit my solidarity to all American members of the AAPG. I sincerely hope that human kind will find the path for a better future free of any kind of terrorism, in a world of peace, cooperation and goodwill.'

I realize the e-mail from the AAPG does not reference the flag. However, it is all about what the flag symbolizes. As the President makes the hard choices over the coming days, months, and years, I hope each of you will support those choices, even if it means you or someone you love is to serve in the military. Maybe it is because of the nuclear fallout in Southern Utah, or maybe it is because of hearing about Grandpa Hafen's plans to defend the Rocky Mountains, or maybe it is because I have spent so much time on airplanes and traveled to so many corners of the world, but whatever the reason, I love the flag, I love the country it represents, the country that allows you each the freedom to become addicted to one thing or another or to choose to follow Christ and strive to be His disciples, and I will do everying thing in my power to defend The United States of America in order for each of you to be safe and able to live your own lives as you choose to live them.

The following is the current status of my emotional reaction to what happened on September 11th. This is suppose to be treble cleff piano music, and for those who play to see it you might need to copy this text, print it, and color in the "0"'s which are suppose to be notes.

For those who wrote and/or called this last week, THANKS! If there is anything I can do for any of you, particularly if you just want to talk about the upcoming World War III and its impact on you and me, let me know and we will talk. And one of the things I will say loud and clear, is always remember, and always respect the flag."

I'm interested in sharing weekly a "thoughtlet" (little statements of big thoughts which mean a lot to me) with you because I know how important the written word can be. I am concerned about how easy it is to drift and forget our roots and our potential among all of distractions of daily life. To download any of these thoughtlets go to http://www.walden3d.com/thoughtlets or e-mail me at rnelson@walden3d.com.

With all my love,
Dad
