Sustainability:
This is a principle first recognized from Buckminster Fuller's book "Critical Path." The present worldwide "green" movement typifies individuals living their lives in such a way as to return to the earth as much as they take from it. More general trends along this same line include growing our own food in a garden, reducing pollution, better waste treatment and recycling, reduction in energy consumption through technology like electric cars, and more efficient urban planning. This is an Old Testament concept, first mentioned when Adam was commanded to "multiply and replenish the earth."
Stewardship:
. This is a New Testament concept that is typified by the parable of the ten talents. It is based on recognition that we come into the world naked, leave life with nothing but our experience, and what matters in eternity is how we use and magnify the blessings and opportunities we are given. This concept was first learned in Stephen R. Covey's books "The Spiritual Roots of Human Relations" and "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People."
Sufficiency:
. This is a concept from Acts in the New Testament, III and IV Nephi in The Book of Mormon, and from The Doctrine & Covenants of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. This value is based on the fact there is only so much food an individual can eat, and only a certain amount of clothing and shelter required to sustain life. Once individuals define what is sufficient for them and their families, including savings and retirement planning, it is logical to consecrate surplus to helping others and towards making the world a better place. This concept is well summarized in Hugh Nibley's book "Towards Zion."
