When the pious Joseph rejects his master's wife's temptations, she accuses him of 'mocking' to her husband, Potiphar. According to the story in Genesis, Joseph was not present at the scene: he had fled the room. With a sense for drama, Rembrandt nevertheless shows him in this painting. Another copy of this work, also made in 1655, is in Berlin.
