Two women both claim to be the mother of one child. When Solomon decides that the child is to be cut in half, the real mother says she'll give up her claims so that the child can live on.

Raphael painted this fresco in the same room in the Vatican palace where he made the famous School of Athens. As he was working on his frescos, Michelangelo was busy in the nearby Sistine Chapel. Both artists had been hired by pope Julius II, a great patron of art.
