Images of the virgin and her young child were very popular during the early years of the Renaissance, and could be found in many homes in Florence. Wealthy Florentines often ordered a version of The Adoration of the Magi, as they felt a strong appeal by the subject.

These round paintings are called tondo's, after the Italian word for circle.
