Martini took this literally: the words flow from the angel's mouth to Mary. "Ave Maria, gratia plena, dominus tecum [..]" (Luke 1:28). This altarpiece was made using much gold leaf. To the left stands Saint Ansanus, the patron of Siena; to the right Saint Giulitta. They may have been painted by Martini's brother-in-law Lippo Memmi.
