Music also embellishes the negative side of religious power and thought. As Henry Thoreau wrote in his book Walden, “Even music may be intoxicating. Such apparently slight causes destroyed Greece and Rome, and will destroy England and America.”2.66 And Thoreau wrote this having never heard of today’s radical rock bands and rap.

Music has played an important role in the author’s life. A rock band in High School years provided a social window and true friends. Singing hymns or children’s songs at church brings emotions to the surface and teaches eternal truths. The Mosrite electric guitar with a rainbow finish was traded for a Martin classical guitar in 1988. There are 120 original songs in a notebook which re-teach lessons learned before. For instance, in a time of great personal sorrow the following words were written, which are tied together by a tune:

Open My Eyes Please – A Prayer, written 13 February 1998

C1. Open up my eyes to see
Help me be who I can be
Give me strength to run with glee

V1.I’m mostly a bag of salty water
With bones to help me stand upright
Covered with muscle and somewhat fatter
Than wanted, with skin to keep me airtight

C2.Give me strength to run with glee
Let my heart find a true key
Help me be who I can be

V2.I’m the father of ten children2.67
Each one perfect in their own sphere
They are each a true and loving friend
Though not one of them still lives here

C3.Help me be who I can be
Love me when on bended knee
Let my heart find a true key

V3.I’m divorced and don’t know why
Knowing my mistakes and knowing hers
Doesn’t make me not want to try
And it doesn’t make up for all the lost years
