From a time perspective, it is interesting in Newtonian Mechanics the nature of time is obscure. Newton introduced time to his equations to formulate the concept of motion. Newton’s equations of motion produce time-symmetric results, which results are independent of the direction of time.2.54 In other words, these equations say time can go backwards as easily as it goes forward. It seems nothing but a mind game to consider time going backwards, and things like broken plates coming back together. Yet to scientists this is just a matter of math.

To a theologian, this is an example of faith without proof. It is interesting how, when the law of gravity became Newton's best-known discovery, he warned against using it to view the universe as a mere machine. Like a great clock, he said, "Gravity explains the motions of the planets, but it cannot explain who set the planets in motion. God governs all things and knows all that is or can be done."2.55 Newton studied the bible and the early church fathers more than he studied science. He said, "I have a fundamental belief in the Bible as the Word of God, written by those who were inspired. I study the Bible daily." For instance, Newton placed the crucifixion of Jesus at 03 April, AD 33, which is now the accepted traditional date."2.56

It is fascinating how often, in history, it is the religiously inclined who have ideas planted in their mind from a source outside themselves, and how these ideas create a revolution within their sphere of influence. I experienced this with ideas which became interactive 3-D seismic interpretation systems. It has been fascinating watching how these ideas have made a positive difference in today’s world, changing the way almost all oil and gas companies explore for hydrocarbons, and resulting in significant new hydrocarbon reserves. To the scientist this appears to simply be a result of the proper application of principles of geophysics and computer science. To me, there is no question about the fact there was a guiding hand, a force, enabling implementation of these ideas, shuffling coincidences, and creating opportunities. However, this force was not the kind of force measured by a physicist, and, from personal experience, it was not the mythological force presented in Star Wars.

Physics is the science of nature, which manifests itself as matter and energy in space and time. Physics studies all spatial scales from subatomic particles to the behavior of the material universe as a whole, which study is called cosmology. Physics is sometimes defined as “mathematics applied to the universe.”2.57 And the mathematics is not intuitive. For instance, the Heisenberg uncertainty principle says that you can not simultaneously observe and measure both the position and momentum of a single elementary particle.”2.58

The more one learns about these concepts, the closer they seem to the concept of faith.
