The Ghost dance replaced the Buffalo dance when the buffalo disappeared from the plains.
It's practice swept across the west fanned by the desperation of a proud people destroyed by
the humiliation of welfare. It culminated in the tragedy of Wounded Knee. In the belief that
the dance would help to bring about the return of the buffalo, their ancestors and their way of
life, they danced until they dropped unconscious to the ground.
